A technical data sheet should be read as a connected set of properties. Selecting an electrode by one attractive number can be misleading because electrical, mechanical, and thermal behavior interact during furnace operation.
Electrical resistivity
Resistivity describes opposition to current flow. Lower resistivity generally reduces internal electrical loss and heating, but results must specify test method, direction, temperature, and whether they apply to the electrode body or nipple.
Bulk density
Bulk density is the mass per unit volume including internal porosity. It is useful for process consistency, but a higher value alone does not guarantee better furnace performance. Pore distribution, raw materials, graphitization, and mechanical properties also matter.
Flexural strength
Flexural or bending strength indicates resistance under a laboratory loading condition. Furnace breakage, however, can involve impact, vibration, thermal gradients, damaged joints, and scrap movement. Compare methods and specimen orientation before comparing suppliers.
Elastic modulus
Elastic modulus indicates stiffness. A column must be mechanically stable while tolerating thermal and dynamic strain. Strength and modulus should therefore be assessed together with thermal expansion and furnace practice.
Coefficient of thermal expansion
CTE describes dimensional change with temperature. Lower and consistent CTE is valuable under rapid heating and cooling because it can reduce thermally induced stress. Direction and temperature range should be stated.
Ash and impurity content
Low ash supports a clean and consistent carbon material. Buyers should define any process-specific impurity limits and request the relevant test method.
Dimensional and joint properties
Diameter, length, straightness, socket geometry, thread pitch, taper, and nipple compatibility are performance-critical. A chemically excellent electrode can still fail if machining or connection control is poor.
How to compare certificates
- Confirm the same test standard and units.
- Separate typical values from guaranteed limits.
- Compare body and nipple values correctly.
- Check batch identification and sampling plan.
- Link certificate data to documented furnace trials.
Practical conclusion
Specifications screen products and support consistency control; they do not replace furnace data. The best evaluation combines guaranteed properties, dimensional checks, safe handling, and a controlled operating trial.
